iOS 27 Update Announced With Faster Apps and AirDrop

The iOS 27 update is official, and Apple’s first feature list makes it look like one of the most practical iPhone releases in years. According to 9to5Mac, Apple is focusing on performance, search, sharing, Liquid Glass refinements, and a long list of quality-of-life upgrades rather than only headline AI features.

Performance is the clearest pitch. Apple says apps launch 30% faster, while AirDrop transfers are 80% faster. Older iPhones should also feel more responsive thanks to a CPU scheduler change, and Apple is keeping device support broad: every iPhone that runs iOS 26 can run iOS 27, including iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE.

Liquid Glass is also being tuned. Apple is adding a transparency slider and sharper, more defined icons with extra layers of refraction. That sounds like a small visual change, but it matters because Liquid Glass became one of Apple’s most visible interface shifts across recent software releases.

Search is another major piece. Apple says iOS 27 rebuilds indexing across the system, improving Spotlight and search everywhere. The phone indexes device context after updating, while Mail gets a new ranking system designed to surface what users are actually looking for. Spotlight suggestions should also become more relevant.

The iOS 27 update includes several app-specific upgrades. Photos gains iCloud Shared Albums that can be shared with Android and Windows users, full-resolution media in Shared Albums, photo and video keyword support, better album organization, and the ability to save slideshows as videos. Health adds more advanced cycle tracking plus perimenopause and menopause symptom logging and education.

Apple Maps gets upgraded Flyover with richer aerial imagery, more accurate visited places, and improved route maps in Fitness after workouts. AirPods gain Custom EQ, while CarPlay gets audio scrubbing in Now Playing and better navigation heading and GPS accuracy. The Camera app should use less power and launch faster in Low Power Mode.

There are dozens of smaller improvements too: independent alarm volume, faster AirPlay connections to Apple TV and HomePod, faster HomeKit accessory pairing, improved Bluetooth power management, extra-large widgets, faster emoji and sticker keyboards, smarter downloads on Apple TV, and more efficient Personal Hotspot behavior.

For users, the important point is that iOS 27 is not only a new-feature release. It is also a maintenance and speed release that keeps older iPhones in the cycle while making daily actions such as launching apps, sending files, searching Mail, and managing photos faster.
